Same-Day Bilateral Cataract Surgery in Omaha, NE: What It Is, Who Qualifies, and Why It’s Changing Recovery for Patients

same day bilateral cataract surgery omaha

Cataract surgery continues to evolve — and one of the most meaningful breakthroughs for patients today is same-day bilateral cataract surgery, where both eyes are treated safely in one appointment. This modern approach, offered at ilumin in Omaha, NE, is designed to reduce downtime, improve safety, and help patients return to their normal routines faster than ever.

In a recent KETV Very Local Business Spotlight, Brandon Menke, MD, cataract surgeon at ilumin, discussed who qualifies for this procedure and why it has become such a valuable option for many patients.

What Is Same-Day Bilateral Cataract Surgery?

Traditionally, cataract surgeries were performed one eye at a time, often weeks apart. Modern advancements in:

  • Laser-assisted cataract surgery
  • Precision imaging
  • Improved intraocular lens (IOL) technologies
  • Enhanced safety protocols

…now make it possible for qualified patients to safely undergo cataract surgery on both eyes during a single visit.

This streamlined approach means:

  • One recovery period instead of two
  • Clearer, more balanced vision sooner
  • Less downtime and disruption to daily life

Who Qualifies for Same-Day Bilateral Cataract Surgery?

As Dr. Menke explains in the interview, most patients are great candidates, especially those who:

  • Want to return to work or daily activities as quickly as possible
  • Prefer a single recovery window
  • Are very nearsighted and want to avoid having one corrected eye and one uncorrected eye during the typical wait between surgeries
  • Want to avoid balance issues associated with having mismatched prescriptions
  • Prefer fewer visits or have challenges with transportation and scheduling

Modern laser technology, advanced surgical planning, and refined postoperative care have expanded candidacy for same-day bilateral cataract surgery — making it a strong option for many patients seeking faster, more efficient care.

Benefits of Same-Day Bilateral Cataract Surgery

Patients often choose this approach because it offers significant advantages:

Lower Downtime

Recover once, not twice. Patients experience a single healing period and return to normal routines sooner.

Improved Safety & Balance

Avoids the temporary imbalance that happens when one eye is corrected and the other is not, which can increase fall risk — particularly in highly nearsighted individuals.

Fewer Appointments

From pre-op to post-op, appointments are streamlined into fewer visits.

More Satisfying Recovery

Patients regain binocular vision (using both eyes together) more quickly, which often feels clearer and more comfortable.

Get ready for another Very Local Business Spotlight. Today we’re back at a ilumin talking to Dr. Menke about same day bilateral cataract surgery.

Dr. Menke, what is same day bilateral cataract surgery?

“So same day bilateral cataract surgery is just like it sounds, where we do cataract surgery on both eyes on the same day, allowing patients with modern advancements in technology using laser technology, using equipment and machinery to make the healing time remarkably faster and safer, so that patients can get both eyes done the same day, safely, effectively, efficiently, so they can get back to their normal lives and routine quickly.”

– And who would be a good candidate for this kind of procedure?

“Most patients are great candidates for this surgery, because most patients want to get back to their lives as quickly as possible and have minimal downtime. With modern advancements we’re able to do again both eyes the same day. You just use drops for a few weeks.

So patients that — again, in particular — patients that are very nearsighted are great candidates so that we don’t have to have this one-eye-distance, one-eye-near for that week or two wearing glasses in between with one lens and no lens. And the fall risk is much higher during that recovery when you have one eye done versus both eyes done.

Medically, it reduces your risk of issues and falls. And also as far as just getting back to normal life, you’re back to your normal life a lot quicker.”

Great options. Thank you so much, Dr. Menke.
